Stamford Public Schools celebrate read across America with book giveaways
Children across Stamford went home from school with a new gift from the community Friday.
In celebration of this week's Read Across America Initiative, Stamford Public Education Foundation joined with Reading Is Fundamental to present book giveaways for all public schools in the district. A federal grant funded the event.
Preschool through eighth grade students each chose three new books to call their own and enjoy.
"Books that are representative of the community here in Stamford. So, books that represent each of our children because we want them to be able to see themselves in the books that we give and also to experience windows into other cultures and ways of life, as well," said Lindsay Wyman, CEO of Stamford Public Education Foundation.
Officials say 36,000 books were given out to students in 20 schools.
