Honoring Black history
Black History Month is a time to celebrate, recognize and learn about the Black pioneers, civic leaders, inventors, athletes, historic figures and of course, writers that have shaped our country. At Reading Is Fundamental, we believe there is no better way to do this than though the power of books.
And, with our Race, Equity and Inclusion initiative, we remain committed to providing diverse books by diverse authors not just during February but all year long.
This month, I want to share a few of the ways RIF is honoring Black History Month and supporting parents, educators and caregivers with resources so that children across the country can access great stories that promote awareness, understanding, and inclusion.
- RIF is partnering with Little Free Library to infuse great stories by and about Black Americans in neighborhood libraries across the country. New books were donated to 20 libraries to share with their communities.
- RIF has curated a booklist with curated titles and supporting resources for teachers to use in the classroom and parents to incorporate into reading rituals at home. Explore RIF’s Black History Month Book Collection.
- All month long, RIF will feature read-aloud videos on our social media channels of books celebrating Black Americans. Join us online as these stories come to life and we introduce you to new voices and writers.
- And, we are calling on our community and supporters to join us in helping to put more diverse books into the hands of children across the country. You can shop RIF’s Amazon Wishlist to donate great stories that RIF will distribute nationwide!
We hope you’ll join us to celebrate Black History Month by reading and sharing the vast books available that showcase the many important Black figures in our nation’s history.
Happy Reading,
Alicia Levi
