The Red Scarf: A Country Boy's Christmas Story
Richard has a lot of stories to tell—just look at the marks on his legs and feet. Each one came from a different adventure, and none of them match up. Hard to believe, but he promises it’s the truth, and just thinking about it still gives him a shiver.
In this lively tale, we travel back to southwest Arkansas during World War II and see everything through the eyes of eleven‑year‑old Richard. He has one simple dream: to buy a bright red scarf for Rosalie, the nicest—and prettiest—girl in school. But saving up for a scarf turns out to be anything but simple.
Before long, Richard finds himself mixed up with skunks, bobcats, sneaky robbers, and even a few stolen Christmas trees. Along the way he meets unforgettable folks, like Peg, who runs the local tavern on one strong leg; Wing, a one‑armed marshal who can swing his blackjack faster than most people can blink; and Bubba, a giant of a man who cooks with a frying pan almost as big as he is.
